The Globe Could Be Impacted By New Icelandic Eruption

When Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted last year i think the effects of the eruption took everyone by surprise, even the airlines themselves. It more or less brought air traffic in Western Europe to a complete standstill for 3/4 days. This eruption was on a fairly small scale in relation to previous eruptions and also what could be around the corner. Katla sits right next to Eyjafjallajokull and throughout history every time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted Katla has always erupted a year or so later. Katla’s eruption is likely to be so more much devastating than Eyjafjallajokull because it lies underneath Iceland’s largest glacier which will inevitably melt and cause wide scale flooding in the region as well as shoot out plumes of ash likely to cover a large proportion of the world.

Are you heading out to Africa from Europe or the USA on a Tanzania safari this year? If so make sure you keep your eyes peeled on the weather as when this volcano eventually erupts, even people in Australia are going to experience the aftermath. Flights in Europe were grounded all the way inland from Moscow to the northern tip of Morocco. It’s fair to say that airlines weren’t at all prepared for an event like this but if another eruption is set to be 10x worse surely there is no way a plane would risk a flight in such conditions.

Holiday makers from all over Europe heading out on a variety of trips from a Zambia safari to a sun, sea and sand break in Spain had the miserable experience of sitting in an airport for 3 days with no information and no end in sight. This was a new scenario for many airlines and although some of the ash was deemed safe to fly in, nobody wanted to take the initial risk with a plane full of passengers. This time around an eruption by Eyjafjallajokull sister volcano, Katla is likely to prove catastrophic and will ground flights not only in Western Europe but it’s likely it will effect airlines all over the world. If you planning a trip to Ruaha National Park in Tanzania next year then make sure you get in before the volcano erupts as it will be difficult to say how long the eruption may last for and how much disruption it’s likely to cause.
