Places To Visit On The Isle Of Arran

Situated in the mouth of the Firth of Clyde the island of Arran is oftentimes referred to as “Scotland in miniature”.  Like the nation of Scotland the Isle of Arran has richly varied scenery and a diverse range of flora and fauna, Arran has lochs, glens, moors, sandy beaches, rocky coves and even features a highlands and lowlands region. Increasing the likeness the island of Arran also features standing stone circles, a brewery, a distillery, castles, museums and excellent local produce and crafts. The Isle of Arran is fantastic destination for a vacation, especially for folk who enjoy hill-walking or similar. In the following article I write about Arran tourist attractions and a brief look at Arran hotels.

Brodick Castle

Brodick Castle is an imposing structure of red sandstone which once belonged to the dukes of Hamilton. Located some distance from the town of Brodick, surrounded by extremely pleasing parks and gardens Brodick Castle occupies the site of an ancient Viking fortress. Visiting Brodick Castle is a superb family day out younger visitors will have fun the adventure playground while older members of the family will enjoy the castle’s fascinating collection of silver, fine art and porcelain. You should allow about 2 hours to explore the castle.

Arran Heritage Museum

Arran Heritage Museum is located, on the site of a small school, in Brodick and opens from April-Oct from half past ten in the morning to half past four in the afternoon. Consisting of a collection buildings; a farmhouse, smiddy, croft and cottage plus milk house, stable, laundry, coach house and harness room and more. Exhibits reflect the geology, social history and archaeology of Arran.

Isle of Arran Distillery

Wherever you visit  in Scotland it seems that are never any great distance away from something to do with the whisky industry for example a whisky distillery. The Isle of Arran Distillery uses traditional methods in Scotland’s newest distillery. The distillery is open to tourists from April-Oct and it has a visitor centre and restaurant.

Isle of Arran Brewery

The Isle of Arran Brewery is found next to entrance to Brodick Country Park.  Folk can watch the brewing process from observation windows and a viewing gallery as well as being able to taste the end product. The brewery uses the latest high-tech equipment to produce an ale using natural ingredients without artificial additives.

Lochranza Castle

The final Isle of Arran visitor attraction I want to talk about is Lochranza Castle situated on the North Coast. At first glance it appears little more than ruins sixteenth century tower house but you can get to the interior using keys from the Post Office. Once inside the L-plan tower you begin to see hints of a grand structure.

Accommodation On The Isle of Arran

Finding the most suitable accommodation on Arran shouldn’t be a huge task as hotel accommodation on Arran are found in most of the largest towns/villages (Brodick, Blackwaterfoot and Lamlash all have the minimum of one hotel as well as guest house accommodation). Accommodation to look out for include the Glenisle Hotel and the Lamlash Bay Hotel (in Lamlash), the Auchrannie Spa Resort (in Brodrick,) and the Best Western Kinloch Hotel (in Blackwaterfoot) which all have a superb reputation.
