Be Careful With Your Airline Miles Credit Card

With major changes going in the airline industry you want to make sure that you protect the airline miles you have earned on your credit card. You have used your credit card to rack up as many points or miles over the past couple of years to be able to get the free trip to go to Europe or to see the in-laws on the other side of the country. It would be horrible to see those go to waste.

What can you do to protect yourself from losing your airline miles? The best thing to do would be to choose the right airline miles credit card. The ways you can go about doing this are pretty simple. The first way would be to pick the biggest airline that is closest to where you live and find their rewards program and apply with them. The other way to go is to apply for a airline credit card with a bank.

So what’s the difference and how can you be careful? The difference is that the airline will monitor all of your miles earned and let you know how much you can cash them in for. Sometimes you can even earn bonus points when you shop at certain places the airlines are partners with. The only downside to working with just one airline is that sometimes they just do not have the flight that you need or maybe they will not transfer over your miles to another airline if you have to make a connecting flight. You really limit yourself to how much flexibility you get. Right now you should be concerned with just one airline because of the way that airlines are going bankrupt. If the airlines goes bankrupt you are not going to be able to redeem those miles because nobody will be able to fly you anywhere. The airline does not have to refund you or transfer them. They are gone forever.

The safest bet would be to get a credit card with a major bank. The banks work with everybody and can make up their own rules. They can still offer you bonus miles and rewards. Its really the same thing as cash back and most credit cards will give you the option to just get cash instead of using your air miles for a plane ticket. Interest rates are usually 1%-3% higher than a normal credit card but if you are a big traveler than this really is wash because the air miles ass up quickly. Plus now you do not have to worry about an airline going under and if one does you can just book your next flight with another airline. The process to book your flight with a bank might be a little bit longer because you have to call the credit card companies reservation center and they handle your request. If you had a card with one particular airline you would go to their website, find your flight and press a button to use your miles.

Be sure to make a smart decision when shopping for the best airline mile credit card. Free flights are a nice perk and you don’t want to lose a free flight over a uninformed decision.
